Patellofemoral Pain: Understanding Knee Discomfort

September 12, 20242 min read

knee pain

Patellofemoral pain, often called "runner's knee," is a common condition that affects the front of the knee, particularly the area around or behind the kneecap (patella). It’s frequently experienced by athletes, active individuals, and those who engage in activities that involve repetitive knee movements, such as running, squatting, or climbing stairs. However, it can affect anyone, regardless of activity level. Causes of Patellofemoral Pain Patellofemoral pain typically occurs when there is abnormal movement or alignment of the kneecap as it glides over the femur (thigh bone). Several factors can contribute to this, including:

Muscle Imbalance: Weakness or tightness in the muscles around the hip and knee can alter the tracking of the patella, leading to irritation.

Overuse: Repetitive stress from activities like running or jumping can overload the knee joint, causing inflammation and discomfort.

Injury: A direct impact to the knee or previous injuries can disrupt the normal function of the kneecap.

Improper Foot Mechanics: Flat feet or poor footwear can affect knee alignment and increase stress on the joint.

Symptoms:

The primary symptom of patellofemoral pain is a dull, aching pain in the front of the knee. This pain is often aggravated by activities that put pressure on the knee, such as squatting, climbing stairs, sitting for extended periods, or running. Some individuals may also experience a popping or grinding sensation in the knee when bending or straightening the leg.

Prevention:

Preventing patellofemoral pain involves maintaining strong and flexible muscles around the hip and knee, wearing appropriate footwear, and gradually increasing activity intensity. Cross-training with low-impact activities like swimming or cycling can also reduce stress on the knees. While patellofemoral pain can be frustrating, with proper care and rehabilitation, most individuals can recover fully and return to their normal activities. However, early intervention is key to preventing long-term damage.
